HACKSAW BLADE 300mm x 32-TPI

A hacksaw is a fine-tooth hand saw with a blade held under tension in a frame, used for cutting materials such as metal or plastics. Hand-held hacksaws consist of a metal arch with a handle, usually a pistol grip or dee grip, with pins for attaching a narrow disposable blade. A screw or other mechanism is used to put the thin blade under tension. The blade can be mounted with the teeth facing toward or away from the handle, resulting in cutting action on either the push or pull stroke. On the push stroke, the arch will flex slightly, decreasing the tension on the blade, often resulting in an increased tendency of the blade to buckle and crack. Cutting on the pull stroke increases the blade tension and will result in greater control of the cut and longer blade life.

HACKSAW BLADE ??? 300mm x 32 TPI

  • Hacksaw blades are available in a standardized length of 12 inches or 300mm for use in a standard hand hacksaw frame.
  • Teeth per inch or TPI is known as the pitch of the teeth. This is usually 18, 24 or 32 teeth per inch (tpi) for a hand held hacksaw blade
  • The blade chosen is based on the thickness of the material being cut, with a minimum of three teeth in the material.
    • For heavy-duty cutting jobs like steel reinforcing rod or pipe, an 18-teeth per inch blade would be the best choice
    • For a job that requires medium-duty cutting, like a thin wall electrical conduit, a 24-teeth per inch blade would do a better job
    • When cutting light metals like aluminum, a 32-teeth per inch blade should easily do the trick
  • As hacksaw teeth are so small, they are set in a wave set. The set of a hacksaw changes gradually from tooth to tooth in a smooth curve, rather than alternate teeth set left and right as in regular wood handsaws
  • This hacksaw blade is made of a Bi-Metal material - bi-metal blades have been used to give the advantages of both low carbon steel and high speed steel, without risk of breakage. A strip of high speed steel along the tooth edge is electron beam welded to a softer spine

  • Hacksaw blade specifications:
    • Length: 300 mm ( Hacksaw blades have two holes near the ends for mounting them in the saw frame and the 12 inch / 300 mm dimension refers to the center to center distance between these mounting holes )
    • Hole to Hole: 11 7/8 inches / 300 mm
    • Overall blade length: Approx 315 mm
    • Mounting Hole diameter: 3.5 to 4 mm
    • Blade Width: 11 to 13 mm
    • Blade Thickness: 0.020 to 0.027 inches / 0.5 to 0.70 mm (varies with tooth pitch and other factors)

    • Should hacksaw teeth face forward or backward?

Install the hacksaw blade so the teeth face forward. The saws are designed so the blade will cut when it's pushed (the forward stroke) rather than when pulled (see photo). Some blades have an arrow that shows the correct installation (the arrow points toward the handle). Install the blade so it's tight in the saw and won't bend. When you do a lot of cutting, the blade will heat up and expand, so be sure to tighten it if it starts to bend.

The blade can be replaced by loosening the wing nut adjuster until it comes off the two ???studs??? that normally hold it in tension in the frame.
